Season One

Episode Six
The Pack
Written by Matt Kiene and Joe Reinkemeyer
Directed by Bruce Seth Green
Air Date: 4-7-97

After a field trip to the zoo, Xander and group of troublemakers are posessed by hyennas and terrorize the school and their classmates. It ends after both the school mascot and the principal are eaten by the posessed students.

Nicholas Brendon is fantastic in this episode. If i had any doubts of him before this, which I actually did not, this is the episode that would have turned me around. After being posessed, Nicholas shows us that he can play Xander both awkwardly and with confidence. To be honest, he sort of creeped me out in The Pack.

But even beyond Nicholas Brendon's stunning performance, we see even more character development. Buffy and Willow discuss their crushes (Xander and Angel) with ease and friendliness. Both Sarah and Alyson play the part so well that it's hard to picture yourself outside of their shoes. You truly feel for these characters.

This is another episode that introduces us to that humor the fans became so attached to later in the series. Buffy and Giles train together and it is both cute and funny...Anthony Stewart Head is magnificent in this scene.
By far the greatest line, both script-wise and for Sarah's delivery: "And the weird behavior award goes to..."

Another great aspect of Buffy that we are introduced to in this episode is the great music, both during the action scenes and at The Bronze. No one can argue that this show hit the nail on the head when it came to good music.

My one complaint is how utterly painful Sarah's performance is in the hallway when she is holding the pig. It is the first time in a while that we are brought back to the early episodes, with her awkwardness and misunderstanding of the character. It honestly makes my stomach hurt to watch how unnatural she seems because I know she can do much better.

This is a quite interesting and original episode, so I give it a B.
