Season One

Episode Five
Never Kill a Boy on the First Date
Written by Rob Des Hotel and Dean Batali
Directed by Daved Semel
Air Date: 3-31-97

Buffy has her first date in Sunnydale, which ends up at the funeral home where Giles and Buffy are venturing to prevent the Anointed One's rising.  It features such classic lines as: "If the apocolypse comes, beep me!" and "Clark Kent had a job, I just want to go on a date." and finally "You.  Killed.  My.  Date!"

All of the actors on Buffy the Vampire Slayer are beginning to come into their talents.  Also, character connections are growing and they are becoming real people.  They're no longer simple stereotypes that the writers slapped into a bizarre world of monsters and mystery, they are human beings that have feelings and personalities that anyone can relate too.  And what's more, the very idea and concept behind Buffy is becoming apparant.  There is mystery, humor and horror all at once, making for some very good television.

Xander's awkwardness is no longer forced or annoying.  He is becoming a cute and loveable dork whose humor is entertaining rather than irritating.

The Anointed One is introduced and it is a major twist.  While Buffy and Giles were under the impression that he must be a large, tattooed, wanted murderer...a little boy was being handled by the vampires of Sunnydale.  He is incredibly creepy, as most evil children are in classic horror films, and I honestly don't feel that he could have been cast better.

This episode has it all...horror, mystery, Giles in danger, Angel being a jealous brooding loser, and my favorite of all, Giles and Buffy's bonding moment at the end.  Very nice.
Oh!  And pay attention next time to Willow's juice box drink at the end.  I don't think I've had one of those since the 90's.  Do they still make them?

This is a fairly good episode and that is why I give it a whopping A-.
